Bare Tool vs. Kit: How to Tell Which Tool Deal Is Actually Cheaper
“Bare tool” means just the tool: no battery, no charger. A “kit” includes one or more batteries and a charger, usually in a bag or case. Kits look expensive next to bare tools, and bare tools look cheap until you add batteries. Here’s how to compare them properly.
The one calculation that matters
Work out what you’re really paying for the tool once you account for the batteries and charger in the box:
Effective tool price = kit price − what the batteries and charger would cost on their own
Use the going price of a comparable battery starter pack (same voltage, similar amp-hours) from the same brand, not the inflated list price.
A worked example
These numbers are illustrative, not current prices:
- Drill/driver kit with two 2.0Ah batteries and a charger: $179
- The same drill as a bare tool: $109
- A two-battery 2.0Ah starter pack on its own: $99
Effective drill price inside the kit: $179 − $99 = $80. If you need batteries anyway, the kit is the better deal by $29. If you already have plenty of batteries, the bare tool is cheaper overall because you’re not paying for batteries you don’t need.
Things that quietly change the math
- Battery size. A kit with 5.0Ah batteries is worth a lot more than one with 1.5Ah or 2.0Ah “compact” packs. Holiday special-buy kits sometimes use smaller batteries than the regular version, so compare the full model number.
- Brushed vs. brushless. A bargain kit may contain the older brushed model. That can be fine for light use, but don’t compare its price with a brushless kit.
- Charger type. Rapid chargers cost more than standard ones and are worth more in a kit.
- Free-tool promotions. “Buy a battery kit, get a bare tool free” offers can make the kit-plus-tool combination the cheapest option of all. See how those promos work.
Quick rules
- New to a platform? Buy a kit or a battery bundle first. It’s almost always cheaper than bare tools plus batteries bought separately.
- Two or more batteries already? Bare tools are usually the best value, and that’s where we find most Buy verdicts.
- Batteries getting old? A kit or battery promo can be a cheap way to refresh them while adding a tool.
